The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in partnership with the UNDP Pacific Centre will convene a regional training workshop in Honiara from 30 June to 2 July 2008 on freedom of information for policy makers in Forum Island Countries.

The workshop is in line with the Good Governance pillar of the Pacific Plan, specifically Initiative 12.3 on supporting the implementation of the good governance enhancing mechanisms. The participants will examine Freedom of Information as a measure for promoting greater transparency and accountability in their countries. This is an ongoing activity for the Secretariat and the UNDP Pacific Centre.

Earlier this year, the Cook Islands joined the growing group of nations recognising the right of their people to access information.  This is a great step forward for the Pacific and one that will strengthen and promote accountability and transparency in governance. The workshop seeks to build on this momentum of interest on freedom of information, using the Cook Islands example as part of discussions to ignite and renew further interest  among FICs whom have been discussing the concept. Key issues for discussion at the workshop include the value of right to information, key challenges for governments regarding information disclosure and the pratical challenges of implementing freedom of information legislation.

The workshop will be be held at the Kitano Mendana Hotel, Honiara and will be attended by key state officials and policy makers from FICs who are involved in work relating to information disclosure and freedom of information.
