PRESS STATEMENT ( 03/08)
Pacific Islands Forum-Fiji Joint Working Group on the Situation in Fiji
21 February 2008, Forum Secretariat, Suva
AGREED OUTCOMES
The Working Group held its twenty-third meeting at the Forum Secretariat Headquarters in Suva on 21 February 2008, attended by senior officials from Australia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
The Working Group welcomed the appointment of the Constitutional Offices Commission and in particular the news that the appointment of the Supervisor of Elections will now proceed without delay, with interviews to be held next week.
The Working Group was also updated on the work of the Elections Donor Coordination Committee, which met on 11 February 2008 and held useful discussions with the Deputy Supervisor of Elections about the provision of international technical and other assistance for the Office of the Supervisor of Elections.
The Working Group discussed the standing issues (the restoration of civilian rule, upholding the 1997 Constitution, the cessation of human rights abuses and addressing allegations of abuse, and support for a credible and independent anti-corruption commission), including the new Regulations for the Bose Levu Vakaturaga (Great Council of Chiefs) publicised this week.
The Working Group also discussed preparations and arrangements for the meeting of Forum Foreign Affairs Ministers to be held in Auckland on 26 March 2008.
The Working Group will hold its next meeting on 6 March 2008.
