Forum Officials meet to discuss strategic and financial issues

The Forum Officials Committee (FOC), the governing body of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, convened today in Nadi, Fiji.

Among the issues to be discussed by officials is the proposed process for development of the Secretariat’s next corporate plan, the proposed process for a review of the Secretariat’s budget, planning and reporting procedures, and a proposed framework for regional meetings.

“The agenda items of today’s meeting encompass priorities identified for action by the Committee when they met in Tonga last September,” said Deputy Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat, Feleti Teo.

“These make up part of the reforms taking place at the Secretariat to ensure continued delivery of effective and result-focused services to our Members.”

The Committee recently approved the Forum Secretariat’s revised 2008 Budget and Work Programme out of session.

“When the 2008 Budget and Work Programme was presented to the Committee last year in Tonga, they noted the recent extra demands placed on the Secretariat resulting from an increasing range of activities, including the advancement of the Pacific Plan,” explained Mr Teo.

“The pressure that this has placed on available financial resources of the Secretariat meant the work programme and budget had to be revised to reduce operational costs, prioritise initiatives and identify the highest priority activities within existing resources.”

PIFS 2008 revised budget now stands at FJD$37m compared to that originally presented to FOC in September of FJD$43m.

The Forum Secretariat will also table at this meeting, as it is required to do under its Financial Regulations, the Audited Financial Report for 2007. Financial analysis of the 2007 Work Programme will be presented, providing additional information required by FOC to supplement the Audited Financial Report for 2007.
