SIS senior officials discuss special needs of membership

SIS SENIOR OFFICIALS’ MEETING



The special needs of the Smaller Islands States (SIS) within the membership of the Pacific Islands Forum were discussed at a one-day meeting held at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji today.

SIS members include Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.

Today’s meeting precedes the Summit of SIS Leaders which will be held before the Forum Leaders Meeting in Niue on 19th August.

Issues discussed during the SIS senior officials’ meeting included labour mobility, bulk procurement initiatives, transportation issues including shipping and air services, and alternative financing mechanism for the SIS.

Other issues included renewable energy, sustainable financing for climate change, emerging health issues in the SIS and regional meteorological services.

Recommendations on the issues will be send to the SIS Leaders for their consideration and decision at their Summit in Niue next month.

A representative of the Government of Kiribati, Ms Tessie Lambourne chaired today’s meeting. It was also attended by representatives of CROP agencies.
