This publication, initially produced as an internal report to guide the activities of the 2011 Forum Regional Security Committee, is one of the first studies on World War II Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) affecting Forum Island Countries. In recognition of the lack of information currently available on UXO in the region, it was decided to publish the study as a resource document to contribute to policy and programme development.
This publication provides preliminary insight regarding the extent of UXO issues in the countries studied (Kiribati, Palau, PNG and Solomon Islands), identifies national agencies and organisations currently responsible for clearing WWII Ordnance and discusses challenges faced by respective Police and Defence forces in fulfilling their duties. Issues pertaining to the countries studied such as the lack of available technical capacity, limited resources and
geographical challenges are all discussed.
